A Study done by Soraya Mehdizadeh at the University of York, shows that cyber social networks like Facebook attracts narcissistic people. It seems like Facebook is the perfect portal for self-loving people to boost their self-esteem and by promoting one’s self. The analysis of the study showed that there was a correlation between individuals with lower self-esteem and higher in narcissistic traits were related to more online activity and self-promoting activity.

Narcissism is “a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration and an exaggerated sense of self-importance,” is how the researcher defined the word.

These people flooded their “About Me” section with references that reflect their intelligence and displayed pictures that displayed their physical attractiveness and not their memories.

The study also showed that these individuals would frequent Facebook more often per day than others. In addition, they would be more likely to self-promote one’s self through their status updates. Even Notes, view photos, and the profile pictures were evidences to these self-loving activities.

The study also showed that gender played a role in different forms of narcissistic expressions. Males tend to fill in their “About Me” descriptions with self-promoting information about their intelligence and wit. Females on the other hand, upload many pictures that were revealing, flashy and self-promoting.

Facebook offers there people with a detached communication, where the person can literally hide behind a mask of his/her own creation. It seems like these self-loving people are spending more time on Facebook than in front of the mirror.

What do you guys think?
